2010 > Public Competition > Stella Maris nature Reserve - Carmel horn, the Haifa Bay (with architect Sharon Fishman - Shemes and Architect Nancy Sandolovichi)

Urban Plantation - Featured site extreme topography creates exceptional one-time spatial drama, the essence Encounter of the mountain versus the sea, the city versus the forest, the built urban fabric versus the openness of the horizon. The project tries to translate this drama into a unique urban space based on reinforcing Haifa's unique properties, and contains complex Park fabric of points that have joined together to an active network.
The inspiration for the development of this non-conventional urban space is the action of plantation, which is beyond the immediate purpose, allows controlled versatile intervention by making a positive action on the ground, creating order and legality in the open field, and setting boundaries and scale, while enabling growth and constant change, and without damaging the existing land resources.
Our team main aspiration was to create a focal point for both domestic and foreign tourism, with emphasis on leisure activities, adventure sports and recreational tourism, both to the public and to specific professional interest. We chose to look at the proposal as a mirror engaged broad principals in Haifa renewed connection to her Nature resources and landscape at its disposal.
These contours constituting conceptual tools for us to realize the intentions and relevant content for casting site and its surroundings:
• Strengthening and empowering the site by "planting places" of high-content and stimulation at the non usable geographical range.
• Development activities facing broad audiences, various social layers (single \ many - Private \ Public)
• Create unique and characteristic "iconography" to both the city itself and in the broader context for those coming from out of the northern metropolis.
• Functional organization of different layers and varied activities, creating and encouraging points of human interaction between different users.
• Presencing and creating accessibility of the historic Stella Maris route and Haifa landscape, by changing the existing transportation route.
• Radicalization of conflicts occurring in place in order to create an urban active experiences (conflictual dynamic model).
• Setting up and developing a new urban extension, not typical to the city structure and excluded with massive buildings and inhabitance, derived from the exceptional geographical section ("Half Wadi").
• Using the special conditions for developing of various sustainable green supported systems, which will provide part of the site's energy needs.
The project won first prize and a financial grant by the Haifa Municipality and her economic company.
